HOW I BECAME A CELEBRANT

When I was told I could make a living as a wedding celebrant, I didn’t hesitate. I believe that’s what happens when passion meets purpose.

A phone call from a close friend in 2022 introduced me to a new world of possibilities.
“Hey, last night I had dinner with a colleague who owns a celebrancy business. She asked if I knew someone with a very specific profile to join the team. Spot on! Have you ever considered becoming a celebrant?”
“A what?”
“A celebrant. She had to explain it to me too, as I didn’t know what it was! A celebrant conducts bespoke, symbolic ceremonies — in this case, wedding ceremonies.”
“But do you get paid to do that? I would do it for free!”
“And that’s exactly why I thought of you.”

My friend — of over three decades — had already seen me selecting readings and writing prayers for religious wedding services, crafting speeches, and delivering eulogies. She knew I was a people person: genuinely interested in others’ lives and individual paths, a storyteller at heart, and a frequent traveller across continents, always eager to learn about different cultures and traditions.

You did not misread. I prepared the choreography of Catholic wedding services for family and friends, always led by a priest. Had I been born in another corner of the world, I might have embraced a different religion or spiritual belief. What I truly believe is that every couple deserves the very best experience when celebrating one of the most meaningful moments of their lives: to feel the sacred and magical atmosphere a rite of passage deserves, to hear intimate words crafted to honour their unique bond, and to experience a ceremony that complements the registrar, where legal formalities naturally prevail.

Creating ceremonies that reflect each couple’s personalities, wishes, and beliefs is what drives me as an independent celebrant. I am deeply grateful for my roots, and equwally aware of my wings — the wings that have shown me that every love deserves to be joyfully celebrated in all its singularity and magnificence.
